About the Dr. Joyce Site

DrJoyce.net is a curated digital portfolio of academic and public scholarship, op-ed essays, videos, and social media for Joycelyn A. Wilson, a qualitative researcher and (southern) ethnographer of the Hip Hop generation at Virginia Tech and director of the Four Four Beat Project. Her research interests are oriented in social justice and civic engagement as it sits at the nexus of African American expressive traditions and intellectual history, ethnography, and digital humanities. Her public commentary bridges race, class, and gender with sociocultural issues facing under-represented communities. She's an Emmy-nominated docufilm producer and alumni fellow of the Harvard Hiphop Archive. She's a former high school math teacher, has written for market-driven music and culture publications, and has contributed commentary to Arts ATL, CNN, Al-Jazeera America, The Root, NewsOne, HuffPost Live, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, BET, and VH1 Rock Docs's ATL: The Untold Story of Atlanta's Rise in the Rap Game. She's lectured at Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Morehouse College, Occidental College, Harvard, Yale, and other institutions. She's a style junkie who enjoys having provocative conversations that elevate the social justice conscience in our communities.
